The President of the Republic, Nicos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhürman, are holding another meeting today. The meeting between the leaders is taking place as part of their regular contacts and the continuation of substantive discussions between them, and it will be their last meeting before the United Nations General Assembly in New York. It will take place at the United Nations Good Offices Offices, in the Nicosia airport area.
Earlier this week, the Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, and the special representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mehmet Dana, with reliable sources reporting that they had a substantive discussion concerning, among other things, methodology and confidence-building measures.
The UN Secretary-General, responding to a question from CNA on Wednesday, stated that no 3+1 or 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue is expected to take place on the sidelines of the General Assembly in New York, noting that “there is still a lot of work to be done.”
On September 9, following his latest meeting with Mr. Erhurman, President Christodoulides had stated that there might be a joint meeting between himself and the Turkish Cypriot leader in New York, either with the UN Secretary-General or with his Personal Envoy, María Ángela Olgín.
