AKEL responds sharply to DISY, noting that “after hours and days of silence, DISY has finally deigned to comment on the investigation into the wiretapping scandal in Cyprus.”
In a statement, the left-wing party asks, “Why is DISY afraid of the truth about the surveillance van?”
It notes, however, that instead of finding the courage to address the substance of the scandal and the need for a thorough investigation, “DISY tried to target AKEL for ‘political interference.’”
At the same time, he calls on Pindarou to “look in the mirror” if she is sincerely looking for “political interference” in the spy van scandal.

“It was through political interference by DISY that a passport and a firearms license were granted to the co-owner of the black van, Shahak Avni. It was through political intervention by the Office of the DISY President that a request was forwarded to the other co-owner, Tal Dillian, at the Ministry of Commerce to grant him a license to export surveillance softwareto the Netherlands. It was through political intervention by the DISY government that the surveillance company carried out illegal activities in Cyprus, since, as Mr. Dillian admitted, it cooperates “exclusively with governments and law enforcement agencies.”
AKEL’s only political intervention in the entire affair, he adds, was to publicly denounce the surveillance scandal and demand a full investigation and the publication of Ilias Stefanou’s report, which remains locked away in the Legal Service’s files.
“If DISY disagrees with this, then it must explain to the public why it fears a full investigation, transparency, and the truth about the surveillance van,” AKEL concludes.
