The female inmates “don’t even want to see” the doctor

The two doctors accused of causing the death of Giorgos Mazonakis were taken to Korydallos Prison, while the judicial investigation is expanding and an audit of their financial records is underway.

The two doctors, who are accused of intentional homicide with possible criminal negligence, in connection with the death of the popular singer Giorgos Mazonakis following a blood-letting procedure at the private clinic on Karneadou Street in Kolonaki, are now being held at Korydallos Prison.

The two defendants are challenging the decision by the investigating judge and the prosecutor to remand them in custody, which they consider erroneous, and are expected to file an appeal against it.

Mazonakis Case: End of the Hunger Strike The hunger and thirst strike announced by the doctor—who is accused of causing the death of Giorgos Mazonakis—lasted
less than 24 hours. Meanwhile, his wife has already been taken to the cell where Irini Mourtzoukou was being held.

The doctor ended his hunger and thirst strike early Thursday morning and officially informed prison authorities of his decision.

After the required procedures were completed, he underwent an interview during which he was briefed in detail on the prison rules, as well as what he is and is not permitted to do.

He was then taken to Wing 6 and placed in a cell with police officers awaiting trial. All are under protective custody.

“I have never had Giorgos Mazonakis as a patient”
According to Star, some of his first words upon arriving at his wing were: “My clinic is located in the same building as my wife’s; I’ve never had Giorgos Mazonakis as a patient—I don’t know why I’m here. It was only a matter of time before Giorgos Mazonakis left; the question is, who would the bomb go off on?” she reportedly said provocatively.

The doctor’s first appearance in prison
The picture is different for his wife, who, according to Star, does not appear particularly composed. The situation was similar at the Athens Security Sub-Directorate, where she reportedly cried constantly.

The doctor went through the interview process with the warden and the chief guard and was briefed on how the prison operates.

Among other things, she wanted to know:

  • What hours she is allowed to receive visitors.
  • On which days her family and friends can visit her.
  • How her family can deposit money for her.

Under protective custody along with other inmates

The 55-year-old doctor, who had performed the bloodletting, is under protective custody along with women accused of child abuse.

She will be allowed yard time exclusively with them, as, according to reports, the atmosphere in the women’s prison is particularly tense.

In fact, it is reported that the other inmates do not even want to see her.

Increased Security Measures in Prisons
A top priority for correctional authorities is to ensure the smooth operation of the prisons, as well as the physical safety of the two inmates, as tensions are running high.

Giorgos Mazonakis was particularly well-liked at Korydallos Prison. In 2023, he had performed a concert in the women’s wing, where he had developed a personal and emotional bond with the female inmates.

For their protection, the two doctors will be allowed out into the yard separately, under increased surveillance, while remaining in areas with controlled access.

Where the two doctors
are being held
The 55-year-old doctor was placed in a single cell on the first floor of the women’s wing, near the infirmary, in a section where women accused of child abuse are primarily held.

Her husband is in the sixth wing, in a cell that can accommodate two to three inmates. This wing primarily houses individuals convicted of financial crimes.

The two are expected to submit the initial standard requests required of newly admitted inmates, including the installation of a television in their cells.

The two doctors’
finances under scrutiny
At the same time, the investigation into the financial activities of the two doctors is expanding. At the direction of the head of the Anti-Money Laundering Authority, Charalambos Vourliotis, special teams will conduct a detailed examination of their assets to determine whether the crime of money laundering has been committed.

If relevant evidence is found, the Authority is expected to immediately proceed with the seizure of their movable and immovable property and forward the relevant file to the competent prosecutor.

New Developments in the Judicial Investigation
Meanwhile, new evidence is emerging in the judicial investigation of the case. On the day the fraudulent withdrawal took place, Giorgos Mazonakis had a scheduled appointment with a hypnotherapist at his office in Kifissia.

The appointment, however, never took place, as the singer’s sudden death intervened.

The photograph the doctor sent to the sleep therapist
This particular therapist voluntarily appeared before the investigating judge at the courthouse of the former Evelpidon School, believing that his testimony was essential to the legal proceedings.

At the same time, questions have arisen regarding the fact that the accused doctor had sent the sleep therapist a photograph of the artist.

The witness is expected to testify before the investigating judge on Monday to explain the exact reason why this particular photograph was sent to him.
