Recently, there has been a surge in incidents of citizens being defrauded via text messages (SMS) on their cell phones, in which the perpetrators falsely claim to be the Cyprus Police.
These messages contain a link through which the perpetrators urge recipients to make a purported out-of-court fine payment. Their goal is to steal personal and banking information, as well as to extort money.
The Police are informing the public that these messages are fake and have no connection to the Cyprus Police.
Safety Tips:
- Do not click on links: Avoid clicking on links sent to you via SMS, email, or messaging apps from unknown or suspicious senders.
- Do not enter personal or banking information on suspicious websites.
- To verify any pending matters with the Police, the public is urged to contact the Police through their established communication channels.
