“The only thing they told us before Mazonakis was transferred…”: Revelations from the President of the EKAB Employees’ Union regarding the two doctors

Everything that happened before the singer was taken to the hospital

George Mazonakis’s doctors and the events that took place at the Karneadou Clinic in Kolonaki before the singer was transported to the hospital were discussed by the president of theand vice president of POEDIN, spoke to ERT News.

Mr. Mathiopoulos addressed the allegations made against the EKAB paramedics by the two doctors, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, arguing that the crew followed the prescribed protocols from the outset, while they had not been informed of the medical procedures that had been performed on the singer beforehand.

“After a week, the defendants began accusing the rescuers of not performing CPR. We, of course, followed protocol from the very beginning,” he noted.

As he explained, the paramedics had not been fully briefed on the patient’s condition or on what had transpired earlier at the clinic.

“Unfortunately, they didn’t tell us what medical procedures were being performed in general, or inform us who the patient was and what had happened. We began the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) protocol as required, and since the singer did not regain consciousness, we transported him to “Elpis”,” he said.

The president of the EKAB workers’ union noted that all actions taken by the crew are recorded in the ambulance log, which is submitted to the hospital’s emergency department.

“In every incident, we document what happened. Especially if we pick up a patient from a doctor’s office, there’s also a medical note that the doctors give us if they don’t accompany the patient. In emergency cases, they usually accompany the patient to assist the paramedic so that, if there is any hope of saving the person, they can be saved during transport,” he said.

“We were not aware of plasmapheresis”

When asked whether the paramedics were familiar with the plasmapheresis procedure, Mr. Mathiopoulos replied in the negative.

“No, they didn’t know about it. The only thing a woman—probably the doctor—said was, ‘We didn’t put him on the machine; he wasn’t hooked up.’ My colleagues didn’t know which machine she was referring to,” he said.

He also described what happened as the singer was being carried to the ambulance, noting that the doctor who was at the scene initially followed the crew.

“When we loaded the singer into the ambulance, the doctor followed us. But then, when we told him that the singer was going to ‘Elpis,’ he went back to the clinic and didn’t come back, so we left because we had to,” he said.

Referring to the conditions under which patients are transported, he explained that the singer was transported in a special chair because a stretcher wouldn’t fit in the elevator.

“When a stretcher won’t fit in the elevator, we use a special chair. There is a stretcher, but when there is no elevator large enough to accommodate the stretcher at the clinic we’re going to, we use the ambulance chair,” he noted.

Finally, he also addressed the actions doctors take after a cardiac arrest, stating:

“When the defibrillator isn’t working, how do you perform CPR? When you haven’t connected the person in cardiac arrest to oxygen and are using an Ambu bag? There’s no way the patient can be resuscitated,” he stated.
