Mitsero: A “Boiling Pot”—Eight Communities Warn of Escalation Over the Asphalt Project

"There is no room for yet another troublesome project"
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Eight affected communities in the region have announced that they will escalate their protests if the process of establishing an asphalt plant in Mitsero continues, as announced by eight affected communities in the region, which held a peaceful protest on Thursday at the proposed construction site of the plant.

In a statement issued by the Mitsero Community Council on behalf of the eight communities, it is noted that there is intense concern regarding the proposed construction of the plant, at a time when, as they argue, no solutions have been provided for the region’s existing environmental problems, despite government commitments and relevant legal obligations.

The communities report that the “accumulated nuisances” in the area have been confirmed, as they note, even by government experts, arguing that there is no room for yet another disruptive project.

At the same time, they express concern that, as they point out, no substantial progress has been made in addressing the region’s environmental issues, while at the same time the process for establishing the asphalt plant is moving forward.

According to the statement, the communities are continuing their legal battle and their discussions with the government, while also considering a series of mobilizations and escalating their protests.

The statement is signed by the Community Councils of Agios Ioannis, Agrokipia, Aredio, Kato Moni, Malounda, Meniko, Mitsero, and Orounta, with the support of the “Communities in Action” Initiative Group.
