Panathinaikos remains undefeated this season, and its 1-0 victory over Kalamata—thanks to a goal by Andreas Tetei—also held historical significance for the “Greens”. Jacob Nystrup’s team has now gone 13 official games into the season without a loss, matching the best run of the past 25 years while also setting a unique record.
The “clover” surpassed the corresponding record set by Yiannis Kyrastas’s Panathinaikos in the 2001–02 season, when the “Greens” had also remained undefeated in their first 13 games. That team had a record of nine wins and four draws until it suffered its first loss, a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at Highbury in the Champions League.
This year’s Panathinaikos has already racked up ten wins during this stretch, with two of them coming in extra time, in away European matches against CSKA 1948 and Hradec. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it comes during a period when the team is also competing in European competitions.
However, this is not the longest unbeaten streak in the club’s history. In the 1983–84 season, Jacek Gmoch’s Panathinaikos had gone 26 games without a loss—with 20 wins and six draws—before losing in Larissa. Even more historic was the 1963–64 season, when, under the guidance of Stepan Bobek, the team won the league title undefeated. In those two instances, however, the team had no concurrent commitments in a UEFA competition.
Until now, Panathinaikos’ best unbeaten start to a season that also included European matches had stopped at 11 games and had been achieved three times. In 2000–01 under Angelos Anastasiadis and in 1999–2000 under Giannis Kyrastas, with nine wins and two draws, as well as in 1995–96 under Juan Ramón Rocha, when the “Greens” had eight wins and three draws.
