The death toll from the Filo Jet shipwreck off the coast of Kyrenia on August 30 has risen to 15, following the discovery of yet another body on Saturday inside the sunken vessel. However, the identity of the person found has not yet been disclosed.
Yeni Duzan reports that the victim is a man, but DNA test results are pending. Halkin Sesi reports that search operations using the chartered vessel Optimus Prime are continuing in sections of the sunken catamaran, while the black box has not yet been located.
“Prime Minister” Ünal Ustel announced that the “government” has passed “regulations” regarding legal matters, accommodation and medical care for relatives of victims and those missing from the shipwreck, which include “free legal assistance to victims in cooperation with the Turkish Cypriot Bar Association, waiving court fees, stamp duties, and other legal costs for cases related to the shipwreck, and arrangements for the accommodation of relatives,” so that they may attend the proceedings.
According to Mr. Oustel’s statement, these arrangements include free public health care services through August 30, 2027. “No family will have to return to their home country and follow their case from thousands of kilometers away because their period of stay has expired. They will be here; they will be present in court when necessary; and they will be able to follow the proceedings in person.”
“We will continue to stand with them until the end; those responsible will certainly be held accountable before the law,” concluded Mr. Oustel.
