The Limassol District Court issued a five-day detention order against two 16-year-olds, a 17-year-old, and an 18-year-old, who were arrested as suspects in the assault and robbery of a food delivery driver, on Sunday evening in the Germasogeia area.
The suspects were located and arrested by police officers when they were seen attempting, along with others, to attack another food delivery driver during the investigation of the first case, while authorities are investigating whether they are also linked to another assault on a food delivery driver, which also occurred last night.
In his statements, Limassol Assistant Police Director Lefteris Kyriakou said that “last night, around 8:30 p.m., we were informed that ten youths, who had their faces covered with hoods and were armed with bats, had stopped and beaten a food delivery driver and stolen his motorcycle, cell phone, and a small amount of cash.”
“Patrols from the ADE, OPE, and MMAD immediately went to the area to investigate and locate the perpetrators, and, after about an hour, we were informed of a second attack on a food delivery driver in the Mouttagiakas area,” he added.
According to Mr. Kyriakou, patrols were dispatched to the area, and during their investigation, they located a group of youths who had attempted to attack a food delivery driver, who, however, managed to escape.
Upon seeing the police, the youths fled, and a chase ensued, with the officers apprehending the four suspects.
He added that a device for discharging harmful gas was found in the 18-year-old’s possession, while a credit card was found on one of the 16-year-olds, who was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation for its origin.
“The four youths, following an investigation in the area and the testimony that emerged, were arrested on warrants for robbery and theft against a 26-year-old food delivery driver, which took place near the Germasogeia River,” he said.
When asked, the Assistant Police Director of Limassol said that authorities are investigating the possibility that the suspects are linked to the attack on a food delivery driver in the Mouttagiaka area, while noting that “based on the investigation so far, it appears their goal was to beat and attack food delivery drivers, but the exact causes and motives of the youths will be investigated.”
They appeared before the Limassol District Court this morning, with the proceedings concluding after noon and a five-day detention order being issued.
