The Greek Coast Guard arrested a 13-year-old and a 17-year-old from South Sudan today (September 21) for the illegal smuggling of migrants.
Specifically, the 13-year-old is alleged to have been the smuggler of the 34 migrants who were located on Sunday afternoon (September 20) approximately 32 nautical miles south of Gavdos by a Frontex drone. The migrants were rescued by a Frontex vessel and transported to the port of Paleochora.
This morning (September 21), 50 migrants were spotted on a beach in the Stomio area of Ierapetra. They are believed to have set out from the coast of Tobruk, Libya, bound for Greece. The migrants identified a 17-year-old South Sudanese man as their smuggler; he was arrested by the authorities.
