The municipalities of South Nicosia–Idali and Latsia are calling on the Ministry of Justice to revoke the decision to build the new Central Prison in the Agios Sozomenos area – Geri. They state that they learned of this decision through the media, without any prior consultation and without having been provided with a comprehensive and scientifically substantiated study.
“If we had to point out a plot of land that is completely unsuitable for housing nearly 2,000 people who will live there for several years, we’ve found it. It has sewage, it has reservoirs, it has sewage treatment plants, it has pigsties, it has livestock facilities, and the 123-kilovolt power line runs through it. I don’t think there’s anything else.”
Stavros Hatzigiannis – Mayor of South Nicosia – Idali
According to the mayor, such a decision overturns local plans, since this particular—large—parcel was intended for other uses.

“A serious consideration was to create a livestock farming area so that the farms located above Dali and Nisou we’re talking about 300 meters from the residential area—to gradually become proper livestock facilities, to be concentrated in one place, we’re discussing biosecurity for the animals, and we’ll go ahead and place 2,000 head there.”
Stavros Hatzigiannis
Local authorities sent a letter to the President of the Republic requesting a meeting with him.
