The Ansar Allah rebel movement in Yemen—also known by the surname of its leaders, the Houthis, and aligned with Iran—must “immediately cease all military actions, threats, and attacks” against maritime transport, the G7 foreign ministers demanded yesterday, Monday, in a statement released on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

“His reprehensible actions” are described as “a dangerous trajectory of escalation that risks further intensifying the conflict, dealing a blow to international trade, and creating economic instability on a global scale”, according to the statement, which insists on the “absolute necessity” of “guarantees” for the “permanent security of shipping” and “the rights and freedoms of navigation throughout the world.”

Six Dead in Saudi Airstrikes on Mocha

The SABA news agency, which is considered to be affiliated with the Yemeni Ansar Allah rebel movement, an ally of Iran, reported early Tuesday morning that airstrikes by the Saudi Arabian Air Force on the city of Mocha, home to an important port, had resulted in the deaths of six people.

“Six civilians, including two children and a woman, were killed, and eight others, including a child and a woman, were injured in airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition in Mocha,” SABA reported.

Under pressure, Riyadh is carrying out daily bombings in areas of Yemen controlled by the rebel movement—also known by the surname of its leaders, the Houthis— though it has not yet forced the fighters to retreat.

The Houthis, who until recently controlled most of northern Yemen, including the capital Sana’a and Hodeidah (in the west), launched a lightning-fast offensive and, within a matter of days, captured Mocha in early September.

They then seized coastal areas and islands in the Red Sea, consolidating their control over the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Following the crushing defeat of the forces loyal to the internationally recognized government, which were forced to retreat under fire, tens of thousands of residents fled, mainly to Aden, the major city in southern Yemen that has served as the government’s seat since 2014.

On Saturday, for the first time since the resumption of the war in July between Riyadh and Ansar Allah, the Saudi capital was targeted by an attack by rebels aligned with Tehran.
