Ortiz Arias’s refereeing in the Madrid derby, in which Atlético defeated Real Madrid 2-1, sparked a great deal of debate. “La Reina” claimed that the referees had distorted the result and even once again hinted at the possibility of withdrawing from the league, prompting a fierce reaction from LaLiga president, Javier Tebas.
“When it’s not the Negreira case, it’s the referee’s fault—or the fact that the referee isn’t an international referee. Any club can be refereed by either an international referee or someone who isn’t. No one has the right to demand referees… on demand,” he said in a post on X.
“Real Madrid is extremely important to LaLiga. However, to claim that ‘LaLiga has no value’ without them shows contempt for the other clubs, their fans, and their history. The league doesn’t belong to anyone,” he added.
Finally, he addressed the on-field aspect, arguing that the protests are merely an excuse to cover up on-field weaknesses. “To claim that the referees are targeting Real Madrid means you’re living in another galaxy. This narrative serves as an excuse to cover up other flaws that are evident in these early games of the season. It’s easier to talk about a conspiracy than to explain what’s actually happening on the field. GET OVER IT! It’s September, and they’re already claiming that the league is rigged. No one with common sense believes this old excuse anymore,” he concluded.
