The provisions of an informal roadmap leading up to the 2028 presidential election were drawn up by the executives and leadership of the Democratic Alarm during the emergency meeting convened yesterday by Party President, Anita Dimitriou, on the fifth floor of the DISY Central Offices on Pindarou Street.
One of the party’s vice presidents, George Karoullas, stated that by October at the latest, the party President will issue announcements inviting anyone interested in the party’s nomination for the Presidency of the Republic to declare their interest. Mr. Karoullas noted that by December, the process of selecting the DISY candidate for the Presidency of the Republic should be completed, so that the party’s chosen candidate will have time to consult with the public and the party’s supporters and to draft his or her campaign platform.
“Our President is seriously considering the possibility of running as a candidate. This is a natural development, given her institutional and productive stance, and it makes sense for party officials to support her and encourage her.”
Speaking on the “Alpha News” program, Mr. Karoullas noted that in light of potential developments regarding the Cyprus issue and with the “backdrop” of the President of the Republic’s attendance at the annual UN General Assembly taking place in New York, the DISY leadership deemed it necessary for any announcements to be made in October.

The hostand journalist for the show, Katia Savva, reported that DISY’s communications advisor recommended that party officials explain to voters why the party is in the opposition and why it does notruling out the possibility of Nikos Christodoulides running again.
Mr. Karoullas replied that DISY is a cohesive and organized party with clear policies on the economy, society, the Cyprus issue, and a European orientation, and that it proposes solutions to the everyday problems faced by citizens.
“DISY has its own political platform; it does not rely on disparate alliances for the sake of the presidency. We will open the doors to discuss matters with other political forces and groups so that we can establish a clear position and a clear platform.”

When asked whether the meeting addressed the issue of the Diplaros-Karousos rivalry and the appointment of Nikos Tornaritis by the Council of Ministers, Mr. Karoullas noted that the discussion was substantive and that “a year and a half before the presidential election, we cannot stray from developing policies that address the daily concerns of citizens who are waiting for solutions to their problems, rather than engaging in internal party debates.”
