UNFICYP will meet today with the community leader of Deneia, Charalambos Alexandrou, following yesterday’s incident in the buffer zone, with UNFICYP spokesperson Alim Sidik stating that the meeting will emphasize the importance of exercising maximum restraint and avoiding actions that could increase tensions in the region.
Speaking to CNA on Thursday, Mr. Siddiq noted that UNFICYP “continues to cooperate with all parties involved to help maintain calm and stability,” adding that “the underlying issues require long-term political solutions.”

As he said, “our role is to prevent escalation and ensure the safety of the farmers and members of the peacekeeping force.”
The UNFICYP spokesperson also confirmed that the situation in Denia has returned to normal.
According to Mr. Sidik, today’s meeting with the community leader of Deneia will focus on the need to demonstrate “maximum restraint and avoiding any actions that could increase tension in the area.”
Furthermore, diplomatic sources told CNA that the necessary steps are being taken with the peacekeeping force to avoid further tensions, as is standard practice in such cases.
