"Turkey is not Greece's enemy but a neighbor and NATO ally," said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while calling for Greek-Turkish relations not to be used as a domestic political issue in the run-up to the Greek elections.
Speaking from New York during the 81st UN General Assembly, the Turkish President answered questions from journalists at Türkevi regarding Greece, the upcoming elections, and statements regarding the F-35s.
As he stated, Ankara has no interest in getting involved in the domestic politics of Greece or other neighboring countries.
“Elections may be held in Greece; the government may change; the opposition may change. These are not our concern,” he said.
He added that Turkey’s priorities are “Turkey’s rights and security and the maintenance of peace and calm in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean.”
“I want to make this very clear: Turkey is not Greece’s enemy. It is its neighbor and ally under the NATO umbrella,” he said.
He also noted that relations between the two countries are “so sensitive and important that they should not be used as campaign fodder.”
In conclusion, the Turkish President stated that Ankara has focused on its own agenda and “is dealing with its own affairs.”
