NIKOS CHRISTODOULIDIS—President of the Republic: “Let’s
give diplomacy some breathing room over the next few hours, the next 24 hours, to see if any concrete developments emerge.”
This statement by President Christodoulides, made immediately after his meeting a short while ago with the UN Secretary-General, highlights the efforts being made by the United Nations to achieve a positive outcome on the Cyprus issue on the sidelines of the General Assembly. These efforts appear to be aimed at convening a trilateral meeting at the conclusion of the Assembly.
NIKOS CHRISTODOULIDIS—President of the Republic: “Yes
, it is on the Secretary-General’s mind, and he will inform me accordingly. You understand that there must be a response from the other side as well.”
If there is a response, the President informed António Guterres that he would extend his stay in New York.
In that case, the trilateral meeting will take place at the end of the week, as the Secretary-General’s meeting with Tufan Erhurman is scheduled for Saturday.
The Turkish Cypriot leader arrived in the American metropolis and met with Maria Olgin in the afternoon, though no details were made public.
During the meeting at United Nations headquarters, an assessment was made of the current situation regarding the Cyprus issue.
As of now, however, consultations are still ongoing. Immediately after Erhurman, Olgin is expected to meet with the two negotiators, Menelaos Menelaou and Mehmet Dana, while the most significant aspect is that this meeting will take place in the presence of Deputy Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo, who will assess whether the conditions for a trilateral meeting are met.
One important factor that could contribute positively is the convergence document, which, however, according to President Christodoulides, has not yet been prepared by the UN.
NIKOS CHRISTODOULIDIS—President of the Republic: “The
document is in its final form, and it is part of the broader discussions we’ve had.”
Athens has also joined the discussions, with Maria Olgin meeting with Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis.
The speech that Kyriakos Mitsotakis will deliver in the early hours of the morning will also include references to the Cyprus issue.
