“Let’s all tone it down”: Antonis’s appeal to Makis and Nikola, and his response regarding government agreements that aren’t being implemented

He states that President Christodoulides will address the issue when he returns

“The President of DIKO made statements with which we do not agree.”

Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou responded with this statement from the Alpha News studio to the remarks made yesterday by Nikolas Papadopoulos on the same program, namely that Finance Minister Makis Keravnos refuses to implement agreements the government has entered into with social groups, such as the Fund for Depositors Affected by the Bank Restructuring, the budgets of local government authorities, compensation for livestock farmers due to foot-and-mouth disease, etc.

Mr. Antoniou explained that the Minister of Finance remains committed to implementing the decisions of the President of the Republic, the Cabinet, and the provisions of the governance program, while reserving the right to disagree and take different approaches on issues, as “is legitimate in a partnership” and are part of “his job.”

Commenting on the intense confrontation between Makis Keravnos and Nikola Papadopoulos, Mr. Antoniou pointed out that “the matter must be put to rest” and explained that the issues that arise should be discussed with discretion.

He also called for “everyone to tone down their rhetoric so that this does not continue and we can move forward,” and noted that upon Nikos Christodoulides’ return from New York, where he is participating in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, “he will look into the matter.”

At the same time, the Deputy Government Spokesperson dismissed claims of double-talk within the government regarding the Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnectionwith Greece via the GSI pipeline, noting that questions remain regarding this ambitious project of strategic importance for electricity supply, such as its cost. He also emphasized that the government has included in the 2027 state budget the 25 million euros agreed to be paid over the next five years.
