The view that the Cyprus issue remains the top priority for the Democratic Rally and that the party is ready to contribute to efforts to resume substantive negotiations, was expressed by DISY President Anita Dimitriou while speaking to the Kyrenia District Council.
According to a party statement, Ms. Dimitriou stated that the Democratic Rally remains committed to preserving the prospect of a solution to the Cyprus problem, noting that “we will not settle for half a homeland.”
At the same time, she emphasized that the Cyprus problem “is not suited to petty party-political expediencies and patriotic one-upmanship,” while noting that DISY is monitoring the discussions taking place in New York and awaiting the conclusion of the United Nations General Assembly so that its results can be evaluated.
Referring specifically to the people of Kyrenia, the DISY President spoke about the consequences of the Turkish invasion, the occupation, and the uprooting of the population, while also prioritizing the development of a more just refugee policy.
In this context, she stated that the Democratic Rally will continue to take legislative initiatives and submit specific proposals, with particular emphasis on the proposal to establish a Fund for Loss of Use of Occupied Properties.
“We will not back down. We will not give up until our proposal for the Fund for Loss of Use of Occupied Properties is passed by the House of Representatives,” said Ms. Dimitriou, noting that the proposed Fund would cover all owners of occupied properties.
The DISY President also emphasized that the party does not simply wish to observe developments, but to help shape them, referring to the party’s positions on reforms, Cyprus’s European path, the strengthening of international relations, defense and security, economic development, and the welfare state.
As she noted, the Democratic Rally will continue to defend its policies and principles against populism and “simplistic solutions,” arguing that Cyprus needs credibility, seriousness, strategy, and national unity.
In closing, Ms. Dimitriou referred to DISY’s ongoing engagement with its grassroots members, stating that the goal is to provide information, foster dialogue, and document the concerns and suggestions of the party’s members.
