Mehmet Dana, the special representative of the Turkish Cypriot leader, met in New York with Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Political Affairs.
According to reports from the occupied territories, a written statement indicated that Mr. Dana also met with Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations; Oliver Hohne, Switzerland’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations; Alexander Repkin, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, and Jay Dharmaderkari, Deputy Permanent Representative of France to the United Nations.
It is also reported that Mr. Dana met in New York with the Greek Cypriot negotiator, Menelaos Menelaou, and the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Olguín. “During these meetings, the latest developments in the Cyprus issue were discussed and views were exchanged,” the report states.
Meanwhile, in today’s front-page lead story titled “Diplomatic Scandal,” the newspaper Kibris reports that the Greek Cypriot side attempted to prevent Tufan Erhurman from holding meetings in New York.
According to the report, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the UN sent a letter to all Permanent Missions and diplomatic observer missions to the United Nations, requesting that there be no contact with representatives of the pseudo-state.
The letter states relevant UN Security Council resolutions are invoked, calling on representatives of the Permanent Missions to refrain from meetings aimed at “promoting secessionist policies.”
It also quotes verbatim a section of the letter stating that “in light of the above, and based on information that representatives of the secessionist entity are abusing the presence of high-ranking officials in New York to promote their secessionist policies by requesting meetings, the Permanent Mission of Cyprus calls on the Permanent Missions and Permanent Observer Missions to refrain from any contact or meetings with these individuals in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”
Kipris argues that the letter constitutes a new attempt by the “Greek Cypriot administration” —as she refers to the Republic of Cyprus—to limit the international visibility and diplomatic contacts of the Turkish Cypriot side during the week of the UN General Assembly, while at the same time calling for the resumption of negotiations and dialogue.
