Burnout: Why do we feel it all the time?

Exhaustion has become the new normal
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Exhaustion has become the new normal

We open our eyes in the morning and already feel tired, as if exhaustion has caught up with us before the day has even begun. We struggle to concentrate, put off what we need to do, and wait for the weekend to regain some of our lost energy. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

A new report from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics, based on data from the 2024 National Health Interview Survey, reveals that 71.5% of adults reported feeling very tired or exhausted on at least some days over a three-month period. About one in six—16.6%—experienced frequent fatigue, meaning they felt that way most days or every day.

Although the data comes from the U.S., they shed light on an experience that is not limited to any one country: the constant feeling of exhaustion that can accompany the modern lifestyle and affect daily functioning.

When Fatigue Becomes Exhaustion

Exhaustion is not the same as drowsiness or the expected tiredness following a demanding day. It is described as physical or mental fatigue that does not necessarily subside with more sleep or rest. It can reduce energy levels, make it difficult to concentrate, and make even simple daily activities seem more demanding.

The study included 31,917 adults over the age of 18. Women reported frequent exhaustion at a rate of 20%, compared to 13% of men. The highest rate was recorded among younger adults, with 19.5% of those aged 18 to 34 reporting that they felt very tired most days or every day. Among people over 65, the corresponding percentage was 12.9%.

How it affects our daily lives

Fatigue often co-occurred with other difficulties. Among those who reported it, 69.6% experienced symptoms of anxiety, 46.1% had difficulty concentrating and with memory, and 45% had symptoms of depression. These percentages suggest that these problems often occur together, not that fatigue itself causes anxiety or depression.

About half of the participants who experienced frequent fatigue faced difficulties in at least three different areas of their daily functioning. At the same time, 36% reported limitations in the type or amount of work they could take on, while 29% had difficulty participating in social activities.

What We Can Do

A consistent sleep schedule, regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and simple stress-management techniques can help when fatigue is linked to lifestyle. However, there is no one-size-fits-all solution.

Persistent exhaustion may be related to sleep, diet, medication, mental health, or some other issue that needs to be investigated. If it lasts for weeks, doesn’t improve with rest, or begins to affect work and daily life, it’s important to discuss it with a doctor. In any case, even if fatigue is common, that doesn’t mean it should become our new normal.
