Romanians are “dreaming” of a 13.7 million euro compensation payment for Steaua because of… Manchester City

What do reports from Romania say?

Manchester City’s guilt over violations of financial regulations has opened a can of worms.

In Romania, a report has already been published suggesting that Steaua could claim as much as 13.7 million euros in profits that it could have earned had it not been excluded from the 2016–17 Champions League.

The report states…

“The ruling in the Manchester City case—in which the club was found guilty on 114 charges related to violations of financial regulations—could have implications for other clubs as well. Steaua is one of the teams that could claim damages, having been eliminated by the English side in the UEFA Champions League playoffs during the 2016–17 season.

Manchester City was found guilty of 114 charges of violating financial regulations during the 2009–2018 period, and the ruling could have significant consequences not only for the English club but also for other teams that claim to have been affected by Manchester City’s irregularities.

Several clubs in England, including Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Tottenham, are already exploring the possibility of seeking compensation, arguing that they suffered financial losses due to Manchester City’s systematic violation of the rules.

A potential wave of lawsuits against Manchester City could have a domino effect. Clubs that believe they were at a disadvantage after matches against the English team could consider seeking compensation.

One interesting case is that of Steaua, which faced Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League playoffs during the 2016-17 season. The English side won 6-0 on aggregate and eliminated the Bucharest team from the competition, sending them to the Europa League.

Steaua subsequently received approximately 5 million euros from its participation in the Europa League.

In this context, Steaua could argue that Manchester City’s participation in the competition—at a time when the club is accused of violating financial regulations— affected its chances of reaching the UEFA Champions League group stage, while also losing the opportunity to earn up to 13,700,000 euros more.”
