A candidate, whether endorsed by the Democratic Alarm or not. We’re talking about Averof Neophytou, who announced his candidacy for the presidential election today.
AVEROF NEOPHYTOU: “I am
here today to announce my candidacy for the 2028 presidential election.”
Referring exclusively to the Cyprus issue, he indicates that his sole aim is to bring the national question out of the limbo of passivity, resignation, and de facto acceptance of the status quo.
AVEROF NEOPHYTOU
“I share the anxiety and the call of a large segment of our compatriots for a national awakening, for mobilization with the vision of the reunification of our homeland and an end to the occupation.”
Averof Neophytou finally dropped the bombshell, after first laying the groundwork last week, during which he stated that he would wait to see if anything positive would come out of New York regarding the Cyprus issue.
And since that never happened, he explains in his statement that he is ready to take the reins of the state in the upcoming elections, with the goal of reunifying the homeland.
AVEROF NEOPHYTOU
: “Mr. Guterres, who had staked his legacy on a solution to the Cyprus problem, is stepping down in three months. The deadlocks remain. The dark clouds hanging over the country are growing ever denser.”
From the moment of the announcement, the phones have been ringing off the hook among the party’s top officials, and a leadership teleconference was held during which an initial review of the former party president’s statements took place.
Immediately following the teleconference, a related statement was issued, in which Pindarou calls on Averof Neophytou to provide an explanation.
DISY: “The
only path to securing the Democratic Alarm’s nomination is through the party’s established statutory procedures. Former DISY President Averof Neophytou is aware of the importance of these procedures and collective decision-making.”
Party leadership further explains that no one has the right to preempt the institutional process that will be followed.
EFTYMIOS DIPLAROS: “And
I want to make one thing clear. This isn’t about individuals. It’s about institutions, respect for the tens of thousands of members, and the unity of the party.”
The discussion will continue tomorrow during the scheduled meeting of the party leadership, at which it is possible that—even if only verbally— — the timeline to be followed for selecting a candidate through the internal party process.
