Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed a group of Israeli government ministers and other officials to begin preparing an appeal to theInternational Criminal Court in The Hague against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, citing his treatment of the Kurds and his funding of Hamas. The Israeli network i24NEWS reported this today.
According to reports, the order was issued after Erdogan announced that he had approached Interpol requesting the issuance of a “red notice” against Netanyahu.
This appears to be one of the many escalatory actions that led to the preparation of the appeal to the Court.
The case will focus largely on Erdoğan’s attacks against Kurdish minorities in Turkey, as well as his government’s funding of Hamas.
There is a possibility that Israel will refer the case to the ICC itself, but it is more likely to use a third country to initiate the proceedings. Israel does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction, as it has not signed the Rome Statute, but the same applies to Turkey.
However, i24NEWS continues, sources report that Israel hopes it will not ultimately have to proceed with the appeal and that it intends to use the existence of the case as a means of pressuring Erdogan, essentially for deterrence purposes.
Netanyahu’s office declined to comment on the case, as did officials from the Israeli Ministry of Justice.
