Two foreign nationals were arrested in the past 24 hours in Thessaloniki for illegally transporting migrants. These were two separate cases uncovered during police checks in the prefecture, with a total of 12 migrants involved, including seven minors.
In the first case, a 26-year-old Albanian man was arrested on the old Kavala-Thessaloniki highway, near Nikomedes, after six migrants from Kuwait—including four minors—were found in the private vehicle he was driving.
A second case of illegal transportation was also uncovered on the same highway (near Gerakaros), when a private car driven by a 48-year-old Italian was found to be carrying six migrants from Afghanistan, including three minors.
According to the police, the migrants lacked travel documents, and, according to their statements, had entered the country illegally via the Greek-Turkish border after paying sums of money to human-trafficking rings. The two vehicles, cash, and cell phones were seized.
The two detainees are being taken to the competent prosecutor’s office.
