Haris Georgiadis names an independent figure and a journalist as the intermediaries in the Annita-Averoff deal

"They are not binding on either DISY or its officials," says the former finance minister

The President of the “Glafkos Clerides” Institute “points the finger” at a non-partisan figure and a journalist Haris Georgiadis identifies them as alleged close associates of DISY President Annita Dimitriou, who undertook to mediate the agreement that Averof Neophytou claims was reached during a dinner at a well-known fish tavern in Nicosia.

Speaking on a podcast for the newspaper “O Fileleftheros” with journalist Frixos Dalitis, Averof Neophytou claimed that prior to the 2026 parliamentary elections, he had attended a dinner at a well-known fish tavern in Nicosia, at the initiative “the closest associate of the party’s president,” whom he did not name, however. As he claims, his associate told him, word for word: “As for you, make sure we get Anita re-elected as Speaker of the House so we can all go together, united, to the presidential election with you.” “The day after the parliamentary elections,” said Mr. Neophytou, “they came out with public statements telling her to back off, to rein in her ambitions, that she’d end up with her tail between her legs. And when they were pressuring her, someone stood by her side.”

As a guest on the Alpha News program, Mr. Georgiadis spoke about political maneuvering and games, which he finds completely unappealing, since he has followed the “straight and narrow path.” He also questioned how such an agreement could bind either the Democratic Alarm or its leaders, and emphasized the need to adhere to the party’s statutory procedures.

“It is not even conceivable that any promise or commitment made by anyone—especially once it has been clarified—could influence the Democratic Alarm’s decision; that is my position,” regardless of any promise or commitment made by anyone, especially since it has been clarified publicly by Mr. Averof Neophytou. He had mentioned this to me privately as well, but since he reiterated it publicly, I can also publicly state that a commitment from a non-party member and a journalist who are considered, in one way or another, to be close to Anita Dimitriou. How do they bind the Democratic Alarm? How do they bind, for example, me? How do they bind Giorgos Pamporidis, who—with every right and acting within the framework of our bylaws and democratic procedures—has himself expressed interest in running as a candidate? I wonder on what basis, for example, we could assume that the Democratic Alarm’s political choices could ever be made on the basis of such commitments. Yes, the truth is—and I think this is problematic in and of itself—that promises are being made on behalf of the party chair by someone outside the institutional framework, as you said. You are absolutely right, Ms. Savva. I don’t know who they’re referring to, but—and if I’m expressing some displeasure this way, it’s directed in every direction and toward anyone who might—who could think, “But they promised me.” So I’m moving forward no matter what, but also toward those who thought they could, on behalf of the Democratic Alarm, make such promises or raise expectations—in any case.”
