VIDEO: The Academy of Sciences in Kyiv is ablaze after being struck by a Russian drone

One person dead and three injured in the crash

One woman was killed and three other people were injured after a Russian drone struck the Academy of Sciences building in central Kyiv on Monday (Sept. 28), according to the mayor of the Ukrainian capital, Vitali Klitschko. The building sustained extensive damage, and rescue and firefighting teams were deployed to the scene.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy released a video from the scene showing the extent of the destruction. “A Russian strike on the Academy of Sciences building. A rescue operation is currently underway; they are extinguishing the fire and searching for people who may have been inside the building,” the Ukrainian president wrote in his post.

The images show that a large section of the side wall has been destroyed, while the fire has spread to both the third and second floors. A large amount of debris has also scattered around the perimeter of the building.

Earlier, Kyiv authorities had announced that an unoccupied building in the Shevchenko district, where the historic Academy of Sciences building is located, had been hit by the attack.

Fatalities in Dnipro and Dozens Injured in Kharkiv

Attacks were also reported in other regions of Ukraine. In the city of Dnipro, in the southeastern part of the country, a drone struck a business center, killing three people and injuring at least 12, according to the regional governor.

In Kharkiv, a Russian strike with glide bombs on a residential building resulted in 29 people being injured, including 10 minors, as stated by Mayor Ihor Terekhov.

The wider Kyiv region was once again targeted. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, two people were killed by Russian strikes, including one Azerbaijani.

The Ukrainian president also mentioned drone attacks that caused damage to residential buildings, telecommunications infrastructure, and gas stations in the capital.

For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that strikes were carried out against data centers in Kyiv, claiming that these facilities provide mobile phone services and internet access to the Ukrainian military.

The Russian ministry also announced that a supply center and a ship were struck in the Odessa region; according to Moscow, were being used to transport supplies to the Ukrainian armed forces.
