The presidential race is heating up: Developments within DISY have stirred things up

The parties are weighing their options and are called upon to make decisions
ALPHANEWSLIVE

“I am extremely concerned and troubled by what is happening.Because it’s not just that we’ll lose the election if this essentially divisive course within DISY continues.”
Haris Georgiadis – President of the Glafkos Clerides Institute

The only certainty is that the announcement of Averof Neophytou’s candidacy has shaken up the political scene, with nearly all parties making their calculations and being forced to make decisions faster than they had planned.

The most confusing situation at this moment undoubtedly involves DISY, with Haris Georgiadis stating on the “Alpha Enimerosi” program that the worst aspect of the candidacy race in Pindarou is that it is undermining the party’s unity.

“If it is confirmed that, outside of established procedures, someone announces their candidacy and moves forward.”
Haris Georgiadis

The others are watching the developments with great interest.

As for Ezekia Papaioannou, they have begun entering a new phase of candidate selection, with Haris Polykarpou emphasizing, however, that this person could not be Averof Neophytou.

“With a person with whom there are serious political disagreements, on the three basic criteria that we prioritize—the Cyprus issue, economic governance, and corruption and collusion—these issues must be the cornerstones.”
Haris Polykarpou – AKEL Press Spokesperson

DIKO MP Chrysis Pantelidis pointed out, half-jokingly, that it’s striking that AKEL needed more than 4 minutes to explain why it would not support Averof.

At the same time, he implied that it is unlikely his own party would support Averof either.

“I’m trying to identify differences between Averof Neophytou of 2022 and Averof Neophytou of 2027. I can’t identify any difference.”
Chrysis Pantelides – DIKO Member of Parliament

Developments on Presidential Hill are also being followed with particular interest, even though, according to the Deputy Government Spokesperson on the Alpha Kalimera program, talk of a presidential race is premature.

“The President will announce his decisions in the first half of 2027. Therefore, we stand by the President’s statement. Let’s see how things unfold and so on.”
Yiannis Antoniou – Deputy Government Spokesperson

He added that, as far as developments within DISY are concerned, the government wishes to remain on the sidelines.
