Donald Trump denied a report published Monday by the American news website Axios, stressing that he had not offered Iran either the lifting of sanctions imposed against it, nor the unfreezing of the Islamic Republic’s funds frozen abroad, in exchange for an agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program, amid new efforts by mediators.
“Axios just published an article saying that ‘Trump’ offered to lift sanctions and unfreeze funds for Iran. That is untrue. I didn’t offer them anything!” the U.S. president emphasized—typing that last word in all caps—via Truth Social, while also demanding that the report in question be retracted “immediately.”
The article, citing sources within President Trump’s administration, referred to potential U.S. concessions in exchange for Iranian commitments regarding the country’s nuclear energy program.
Talks between the U.S. and Iran resumed last week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly; however, their future appears highly uncertain.
The Iranian state news agency IRNA reported yesterday, Monday, that no new meeting is scheduled.
U.S. President Trump had hinted on Sunday that negotiations would resume soon —even though he rejected a proposal from Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.
This strategically important waterway, through which one-fifth of the world’s hydrocarbons were transported before the war, is now at the heart of the conflict that erupted on February 28, when the U.S. and Israel jointly launched an attack against Iran.
Since then, the Islamic Republic has been asserting control over it, and the U.S. has responded to its de facto closure by imposing a blockade on Iranian ports in the Gulf, among other measures.
Dialogue between Tehran and Washington had effectively broken down following the collapse of the preliminary agreement, the so-called Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, signed in June by the presidents of the two countries, Mr. Trump and Masoud Pezeskian.
