The preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of George Mazonakis is still ongoing.
New statements from employees of the clinic on Karneadou Street are at the center of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Giorgos Mazonakis.
Another employee of the clinic, who had not given a statement to the police during the preliminary investigation, is expected to appear before the relevant authorities later today.
The new testimonies are expected to help clarify the events that unfolded at the clinic during those critical hours.
The relevant authorities continue to examine and evaluate all the evidence gathered so far as part of the investigative process.
Meanwhile, the attorneys for Dr. Ilias Theodoropoulos announced that they will continue to represent him exclusively, as they are withdrawing from the defense of the second defendant, who is his wife.
Lawyers’ withdrawal for “purely legal reasons”
Nikos Agapinos and Tellos Agapinos, in a statement, explain that the decision was made “for purely legal reasons.”
As they state, limiting their representation to Ilias Theodoropoulos is “procedurally necessary due to the factual differences in the defense of the two defendants.”
The two defense attorneys also note that, should it be deemed necessary, they will explain in detail the reasons that led to this development.
The announcement comes as the investigation into the case is ongoing and testimony from clinic employees continues.
New Testimony from the 61-Year-Old Nurse
A 61-year-old retired nurse, who had been working part-time at the clinic, testified before the 22nd Regular Investigating Judge.
According to reports, during her testimony she contradicted a key detail compared to what she had initially told the police.
In her preliminary testimony, she had claimed that she left the clinic at 4:15 p.m. and that she did not know what had happened to Giorgos Mazonakis.
She reportedly clarified to the investigator that she had actually left later, attributing her initial statement regarding the time to the fact that she had no clear sense of the time.
“I was in the infirmary when it all happened. At first, I said I left at 4:15 p.m. because I had no sense of time. I left later,” she reportedly testified.
The nurse also reportedly described the moments following the incident, mentioning a state of panic inside the clinic. As she reportedly stated, at one point the doctor asked all the staff to gather in her office.
The 58-year-old doctor’s statement
Another key point in the testimony is what the 61-year-old woman reportedly said regarding the 58-year-old accused doctor.
According to the information provided, the witness claimed that when Giorgos Mazonakis was transported by the ambulance service, the doctor addressed the female employees, saying, “We are all jointly responsible.”
She also reportedly testified that after the singer’s death, she had no contact with the accused doctor.
The lawyer for the clinic’s employees, Katerina Kostis, stated that the employees are testifying exclusively about what they themselves observed, depending on where they were in the clinic and how long they were there, in order to assist with the investigation.
The report on intoxication is under scrutiny
At the same time, authorities are also examining the testimony of another witness, which concerns an allegation that George Mazonakis was given alcohol.
This specific piece of evidence is being examined in conjunction with the testimony of the 56-year-old doctor currently in pretrial detention.
According to reports, during her testimony, the doctor made no mention of administering alcohol or any other substance, and she reportedly denies having given the singer alcohol.
The law firm “Nikos Agapinos & Associates,” which represents the defendant, has stated that, due to the ongoing investigation and out of respect for the justice system, it will not attempt to bring the case to the media.
Communication regarding the defibrillator
A significant part of the investigation involves the telephone communication that took place during the critical moments with the company from which the clinic had purchased the defibrillator.
George Adamopoulos, the manager of the medical equipment company, told ERT that he received a phone call from the clinic. Initially, as he stated, he spoke with a nurse, and the accused doctor reportedly joined the conversation afterward.
As he explained, it was confirmed during the call that the defibrillator’s battery had just been installed.
According to him, the defibrillator had been purchased in July 2022 and had not been used until then.
The company representative also noted that the phone call was abruptly cut off, and he then heard a man’s voice thanking him. From what he gathered during the conversation, he said, it was clear that this was an emergency.
What is being investigated regarding the hydrotherapy machine
Another element currently under investigation is the hydrotherapy machine that was in the doctor’s office.
Politimi Leonardou, chair of the Audit Committee of the Athens Medical Association, told ERT that during an inspection of the clinic in November 2025, the presence of a hydrotherapy machine had been documented.
However, as she noted, the day after Giorgos Mazonakis’s death, the machine was no longer on the premises.
According to her, Mr. Theodoropoulos had stated that the machine was broken and had been removed.
This specific detail is being examined by the authorities as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the hydrotherapy procedure.
Employee testimonies are continuing
The preliminary investigation continues with statements from the clinic’s employees.
Another employee, who had not yet been questioned by the police during the preliminary investigation, is expected to testify today. According to reports, other employees are expected to follow.
Their testimonies are expected to help establish the sequence of events that unfolded at the clinic during those critical hours, while the authorities continue to evaluate all the evidence gathered so far as part of the investigation.
