In a categorical denial of reports regarding a change in the route of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI), the Greece–Cyprus power interconnector, on Tuesday.
Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), Mr. Papastavrou described reports of a change in the route of the undersea cable as “completely inaccurate,” essentially clarifying that the project’s design will not be altered due to the Turkish offshore wind farm in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Regarding the drilling and exploration activities scheduled for the near future, Mr. Papastavrou emphasized that during his meetings in New York with representatives of Chevron and ExxonMobil, the project plan was confirmed.
“During my meetings in New York with representatives of both Chevron and ExxonMobil, it was confirmed that the milestones we have set for the exploration will be met,” he noted. This applies, as he clarified, to both Chevron’s seismic surveys and the drilling operations by Energean, HELLENiQ ENERGY, and ExxonMobil.
He noted that seismic surveys are scheduled to begin in the Ionian Sea and continue south of the Peloponnese and Crete. The consortium’s exploratory drilling is scheduled for the northwestern Ionian Sea in early 2027.
