Mourning for the 16-year-old soccer player in Thasos: Stadium safety under scrutiny

On-site inspection and witness statements to determine whether safety regulations were followed
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The circumstances under which 16-year-old Gjana Allan, a young soccer player for Vyronas Kavala, during a soccer match at the Panagia Stadium in Thasos, are being investigated by the relevant authorities.

The tragic incident occurred last Sunday, just two minutes into the match. According to information available so far, the 16-year-old was contesting the ball near the sideline when he lost his balance and fell, striking the back of his head against the field’s perimeter fence. As a result of the impact, the young soccer player lost consciousness and was transported to the Intensive Care Unit at Kavala Hospital, where he passed away on Tuesday morning (September 29).

Beyond the exact circumstances of the injury, the investigation is now also focusing on the safety of the sports facility where the match was being played. Police officers from the Thasos Precinct, in consultation with the Kavala District Attorney’s Office, are examining whether the specific field complied with the required safety standards and whether the facility had all the necessary safety measures in place for hosting matches, especially since minor athletes participate in them.

One of the points examined during the on-site inspection concerns the distance between the wall and the fence and the playing field’s boundary lines. This is a particularly significant aspect of the investigation, as the 16-year-old reportedly struck his head during the fall, at a spot very close to the playing field.

Authorities are tasked with determining whether the specific infrastructure met the required standards and whether the necessary distances and protective measures were in place to minimize the risk of serious injury to the athletes.

As part of the preliminary investigation, the issue of the stadium’s licensing is being examined, among other things, as well as whether the required safety rules were followed during the match.

At the same time, statements are expected to be taken from people who were at the stadium at the time of the incident, as well as from individuals responsible for the operation of the facility and the organization of the specific sporting event.

The forensic report is also expected to be a key factor in the progress of the case and will be included in the preliminary investigation file. All the evidence gathered, including witness statements, the autopsy findings, information regarding the facility’s licensing and specifications, as well as the forensic medical report, will be forwarded to the competent prosecutor. There, all the data will be evaluated to determine whether the investigation reveals any potential criminal liability.
