The Cabinet will approve the Special Education bill today, changing the system’s philosophy after decades and putting the child at the center, President Nikos Christodoulides announced in a post on X.
In a video message, President Christodoulides stated that among the priorities he set from the very first day he assumed leadership of the country was the modernization of the state, correcting long-standing distortions, and creating institutions that meet the needs of the present day.
“Today, in the Cabinet, we are approving the bill on Special Education. After decades, we are changing the philosophy of the system and putting the child at the center,” said the President.
“We are establishing more personalized support for children with disabilities and for those who need additional support; we are strengthening the role of parents; establishing more transparent and effective procedures, and guaranteeing the right to a diploma for all children attending mainstream schools,” he adds.
“We are building a more modern and inclusive school—one that adapts to the needs and abilities of every child,” he continues.
President Christodoulides notes that the government’s reform program “is moving forward with concrete decisions and institutional changes, always focusing on the citizen and improving their daily life, strengthening the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and trust in institutions.”
In this context, he states, “I welcome the continuation today of the debate in the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs regarding the Reform of the Legal Service.”
The government, he adds, has proposed a “substantial institutional change: the separation of the advisory role from the prosecutorial role for the Attorney General, the creation of the office of the General Public Prosecutor, and the establishment of effective oversight of decisions regarding whether or not to pursue criminal prosecution.”
The President of the Republic notes that these are changes necessary for a modern European state governed by the rule of law and that they are in line with the recommendations of European and international institutions.
“With credibility, institutional seriousness, and concrete decisions, we are continuing our reform agenda. We are continuing to transform our Cyprus, for the benefit of society and its citizens,” he concludes.
