The Parents' Associations of the communities affected by the start of construction work decided to boycott classes during the first two class periods (7:45–9:05 a.m.) on Friday, October 2, the Parents’ Associations of the communities affected by the start of construction work on the Prometheas Asphalt Ltd. asphalt plant in Mitsero have decided to proceed with the class boycott.
In a statement, the Parents’ Association of the Mitsero Elementary School noted that, during the school boycott, the children, accompanied by at least one parent or guardian, will remain outside the school grounds in a location to be determined by the Board of Directors of each Parents’ Association.
“Asphalt has no place in our neighborhood, which is already burdened by more than 100 disruptive activities. Our children have an inalienable right to live in a clean environment free from harmful substances,” the statement notes.
“We will not allow anyone to further degrade the quality of life for our children, who are already breathing in the dust from the six quarries as well as the unbearable odors from livestock farms and sewage,” the statement adds.
The protest is being organized by the Boards of Directors of the Parents’ Associations of Mitsero, Agrokipia, Meniko, Orounda, Agios Ioannis, Aredio, Agios Epifanios, Kalo Chorio Oreini, Malounda, Kleros, and Agia Marina.
