The need for the Democratic Rally to remain united, strong, and ready to respond to the major challenges facing Cyprus was highlighted by DISY President Annita Dimitriou, speaking at the party’s District Council meeting in Larnaca, where she noted that the Cyprus issue is the top priority.
Regarding the 2028 presidential election, the DISY President made it clear that her party will field its own candidate. She added that the procedures will be followed and the final choice will rest with the members. “It’s not a matter of individuals. It’s a matter of institutions, procedures, and democracy,” she continued, adding that the decision rests exclusively with DISY members.
A party press release further states that Ms. Dimitriou, continuing her engagement with the DISY grassroots and the broader public, addressed the party’s District Council in Larnaca and said that DISY has consistently demonstrated its commitmenton the national issue and is ready to contribute to initiatives aimed at resuming substantive negotiations.
“The Cyprus issue is not a matter for political expediency. Nor is it a matter for patriotic one-upmanship or public relations tactics,” she noted, emphasizing the need to defend the interests of the Republic of Cyprus in close cooperation and coordination with Greece.
Ms. Dimitriou also referred to the major challenges of everyday life, noting that politics must stand by the people. Housing, the cost of living, high electricity prices, traffic, water issues, bureaucracy, and low birth rates require concrete answers and solutions, she added.
He further stated that DISY will continue to monitor, intervene, and submit proposals, placing an emphasis on supporting families, low- to middle-income retirees, people with disabilities, single-parent families, and young people, as well as on strengthening the economy, competitiveness, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
Referring to the political environment, she noted that DISY stood up against populism and nihilism in a climate of intense polarization, toxicity, and disparagement. “The people chose seriousness. They chose responsibility,” she said, describing DISY as a force for stability.
