New information was presented by the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth on Wednesday, during a meeting with representatives of both fixed-term and permanent teachers in the Ministry’s support programs, PASYE–PEO spokesperson Andreas Kounnis, told KYPE.
For this reason, the teachers will convene on Friday, October 2, at 9 a.m. for an emergency meeting to discuss these issues, which primarily concern the demands they have made regarding their salaries, according to Mr. Kounnis.
It should be noted that teachers in the Ministry of Education’s support programs staged a protest on September 3, submitting a memorandum with their demands to the Presidential Palace, with their representatives reporting that they were received positively and received assurances that their issues would be resolved.
Their demands concern the payment of their wages, since with the expiration of the support programs they are left without a salary and without unemployment benefits for the entire summer, as well as ensuring their ability to work in programs for the new school year.
Speaking to KYPE, Mr. Kounnis stated that at Friday’s extraordinary General Assembly, teachers will evaluate the new information presented during their representatives’ meeting at the Ministry and, based on that evaluation, will decide whether the decision to strikescheduled for next Monday, which both PEO and SEK are calling for.
He explained that during the meeting with the Minister, new developments were discussed regarding the safeguarding of teachers’ income in support programs, without going into details, in light of the upcoming General Assembly, where the issue will be discussed. He added that, regarding the announcement of positions in the programs—which was one of their demands—progress has been made, as announcements have been issued for nearly all programs.
