It appears to be only a matter of time before a second case of avian flu is confirmed. Alpha reports that this is the conclusion reached by the authorities based on the results of tests conducted on the dead goose found yesterday in the lake at Athalass. However, the specific strain of the virus has yet to be identified.
Teams from the relevant agencies are continuing on-site investigations into the possibility that other birds may have developed symptoms, while the public is urged to avoid visiting the area, at least until the beginning of next week.
DIMITRIS EPAMINONDAS—Veterinary Officer/ President of the Veterinary Association: “They should
be very careful when handling birds. That is the main concern—to prevent the virus from spreading to farms. That is what we fear.”
One day after the confirmation of the avian flu case, there are few visitors at Athalassa Park, and no warning signs have been posted.
DIMITRIS EPAMINONDAS—Veterinary Officer / President of the Veterinary Association: “It’s
highly contagious among birds. Humans are infected incidentally; the rate of human infections is very low. Furthermore, it is not transmitted from person to person. At least, this has not been documented in the literature so far.”
Owners of poultry farms and those who keep domestic poultry are urged to be particularly cautious. If they observe increased morbidity and/or mortality that raises suspicion, they are required to immediately notify the Veterinary Office in their district.
