New tensions at the Central Prison, with a prisoner serving a lengthy sentence ending up injured and investigations once again uncovering drugs inside the correctional facility.

The situation escalated yesterday afternoon when searches were conducted in specific areas of the prison in the presence of the Deputy Director, Maria Siali.

Mobile phones were found in the inmates’ possession, as well as hard drugs such as crystal methamphetamine and “lanate.”

The searches provoked a reaction from the inmates. The situation quickly got out of hand; they attacked and beat a prisoner serving a long sentence, who had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

And while tensions remain high at the prison, discussions on the construction of the new prison in Agios Sozomenos are set to begin next Tuesday. The Minister of Justice is meeting with the mayors of Idali and Latsia–Geri.

The purpose of the meeting is to brief the two municipalities on the government’s plans and to allow them to present their own positions.

The municipalities consider this specific plot unsuitable, citing the presence of a Natura site, archaeological sites, livestock farms, and other facilities in the area.

MINISTRY OF JUSTICE:
“Nothing has been finalized. Once the planning process is complete—taking all factors into account—it will be presented to the municipalities.”

After the meeting, those affected will determine their next steps. Meanwhile, the issue of filling the position of prison director remains unresolved.
