Cristiano Ronaldo has decided to withdraw from the Portuguese national team, confirming in an official statement the latest dramatic developments in Copenhagen.
The Portugal captain announced that he made the decision following Jorge Jesus’s press conference and his discussion with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença.
The 41-year-old forward made it clear, however, that for the time being he does not intend to disclose the reasons that led to his departure. As he stated, he will speak at a later date and present his own side of the story to the Portuguese public.
“Following the national team coach’s press conference and after a discussion with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, I made the decision to leave the national team,” Ronaldo said initially.
At the same time, he emphasized that he remains committed to the national team and that he will reveal at a later date exactly what led to his decision.
“When the time is right, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led me to leave the national team, to which I have always been committed,” he added.
In closing, Ronaldo sent his best wishes to Portugal and his teammates, without exception: “Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates the best of luck, without exception.”
