€4.6 million for the drought is a “drop in the bucket”: Farmers are demanding an increase of up to 200%

Letter from Agricultural Organizations to President Christodoulides

Farmers' organizations believe that the 4.6 million euros approved by the EU to cover the losses suffered by producers due to the drought in 2025 is far too low and are calling on the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, to consider activating the provision in the regulation that allows a member state to increase the total amount by up to 200%, “as the EU itself acknowledges that the amount it will allocate only partially addresses the financial difficulties faced by the affected farmers.”

In a joint letter to the President of the Republic, sent on Monday, the agricultural organizations PEK, EKA, Panagrotikos, New Agricultural Movement, and Euroagrotikos expressed their concern regarding the compensation amounts per production sector, as well as the specific production sectors included for compensation, “since almost all production sectors throughout Cyprus have been affected by these causes.”

They refer to the problems caused by increases in the cost of energy, fertilizers, and plant protection products. They also note that the government’s policy of granting subsidies only to professional farmers “while we agree with it in principle, part-time workers in the agricultural sector—who make a substantial contribution both to production and to the environment— are also experiencing the effects of drought, water shortages, and rising production costs; therefore, they must be supported, albeit with smaller amounts than their professional counterparts.”.
