A dignified life, independence, and social participation for older adults are key priorities for the government, said Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou at the opening of the new Senior Citizens’ Day Center at the “Andreas Sophocleous” Social Services Center “Andreas Sophocleous,” which took place on Tuesday.
According to a press release issued on Thursday, Ms. Pavlou noted that healthy aging, lifelong learning, the fight against discrimination, and social inclusion and participation are at the heart of the First National Strategy for Active Aging 2025–2030 and the Action Plan 2025–2027. “Our goal is for every person, at every age, to have choices—to be able to contribute, create, and enjoy life with dignity,” she added.
He also noted that the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare supports, through State Aid Programs, social care facilities and programs operated by organizations and local government authorities, adding that this collaboration is particularly important because the people and organizations within the communities know better than anyone else the real needs of our people.
“Our goal is for this collaboration to grow ever stronger, so that social support continues to reach where it is truly needed,” said the Deputy Minister.
She noted that the Day Centers are “vibrant spaces for gathering, participation, and creativity.”
She commended the “Andreas Sophocleous” Social Services Center “Andreas Sophocleous,” which, as she noted, has been carrying out significant and multifaceted social work since 2008, supporting children, needy families, and people with autism, adding that this latest initiative is yet another important continuation of this work, since in this new space, older adults will be able to feel that they belong, that they are heard, that they are participating, and that their presence matters.
