Petrolina AEK is celebrating its eighth Super Cup title in club history. In the match held at “Kition,” which kicked off the 2026–27 season, defeated TRIA EKA AEL 85-81, with the match taking on a fierce intensity in the final moments of the “Stelios Markidis” ECOMMBX Men’s Super Cup.
For the Larnaca team, this is their second consecutive trophy in the competition; they had also won it in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2023. They also won one as Pezoporikos in 1991.
Petrolina AEK opened the game with a five-point lead, following a two-pointer by Mckinnis and a three-pointer by Durham II (5-0), with TRIA EKA AEL tying the score at 5′ with a three-pointer by Christodoulou (7-7). The yellow-and-greens took a six-point lead (15-9) at the 7-minute mark with a layup by Diggs, and the first quarter ended with a two-pointer by Clark to make it 17-13.
The home team had a very strong second quarter, opening with an eight-point run (25-13) that was capped off by two free throws by Mucius at the 14-minute mark. The lead remained in double digits and actually grew until the end of the first half, with the Larnaca team leading 46-23, a score set by Pavlidis’s basket at the 19-minute mark. This was also the largest lead of the game.
At the end of the third quarter, TRIA EKA AEL cut the deficit by five points (62–44), while three minutes before the end of the game, Hunt’s two-pointer gave the Larnaca team an 18-point lead (78-60). From that point on, however, TRIA EKA AEL made a strong comeback in the title race and, with a 15-point run that ended with Johnson’s layup one minute before the end, they cut the lead to five (78-75).
This was followed by a free throw from Mckinnis (79–75), with Bailey bringing the blue-and-yellows even closer with a three-pointer (79–78). From there on, the game was decided from the free-throw line. First Varsos, then Carry, followed by Durham II, Carry again (one), and finally Tate sealed the final score at 85-81.
