Although he reached match point in the second set, Stefanos Tsitsipas fell short and was eliminated in the round of 16 at the Japan Open in Tokyo by Valentin Vassero.
The 28-year-old Greek tennis player, ranked No. 44 in the world, lost to the Monegasque player (No. 18) 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in 2 hours and 13 minutes, thus bowing out of the tournament.
Tsitsipas took the first set 6-4, but in the second set, despite reaching match point, he failed to close out the set, losing it 7-6(5). In the third and decisive set, Vassero broke serve early, and although Tsitsipas had a double break point at 5-4, he conceded a string of points and lost 6-4.
The Greek tennis player is now turning his attention to the Shanghai Masters (Oct. 7–18).
