Just as he had done before the match against Germany, Vangelis Pavlidis gathered his teammates on the Greek national team before kickoff against the Netherlands and gave a motivational speech. And his words paid off, as the Greek team put on an outstanding performance and came within a hair’s breadth of another great victory, only to be equalized by the “Oranje” in the 89th minute.
“Guys, we got off to a good start and secured two important wins, but that’s not enough. We have to fight today and show everyone what kind of team we are. We’ve got what it takes. Focus, passion, heart, and character—that’s what wins these games. Let’s do this together,” were the words of the Benfica forward ahead of the first battle at Toumba.
