The news “exploded” like a bomb last Friday (September 25) that an independent Premier League committee had found Manchester City guilty of 114 out of the 115 financial violations investigated between 2009 and 2018.
And while the “Citizens” continue to insist on their innocence, England national team head coach Thomas Tuchel admitted that Mark Guehi, Elliot Anderson, and Niko O’Reilly are anxious about the outcome of the case.
Specifically, at the press conference ahead of the “Three Lions’” match against Croatia, the former Chelsea coach revealed that the scandal involving the English club is a constant topic of discussion among the players.
“Are they anxious, or perhaps concerned? I think that would be a very human reaction if you don’t know what’s going on with the team you signed with. They’re still young. They’re ambitious. They’re told they’re completely innocent and don’t know what’s going on. We talk about it at dinner, at a table of eight or twelve people. Of course, we even talk about it at breakfast.”
The German also claimed that the news that City had been found guilty on the overwhelming majority of the charges was a “distraction,” before going on to clarify that the trio of players is now focused on training.
“It’s a big topic at training camp. We had a short break between matches, and it’s a big topic. How could it not be a topic of discussion? We talk to them, but only briefly.”
Finally, Tuchel hinted that he will continue to consider selecting players from Manchester City, even if the club is ultimately relegated from the Premier League.
“I always try to pick the best team—whether it’s the camp, the occasion, or the tournament. I’ll never rule that out, just because they’re not playing in their country’s top division. We have to consider it on a case-by-case basis.”
We remind you that Manchester City has appealed the ruling, justifying its stance by saying that the payments the Premier League’s independent committee considers “fake” came from the Abu Dhabi government and not from the team’s owners themselves.
