A major search operation by air and sea is underway off the coast of Nantucket, in Massachusetts, USA, to locate a Gulfstream G100 aircraft with six people on board that went missing while flying from Bermuda to Boston.
According to the New York Post, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lost contact with the aircraft in the early hours of Saturday morning, shortly before it was due to arrive at its destination, prompting a search-and-rescue alert and the mobilization of the U.S. Coast Guard.
The aircraft had departed from L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda, bound for Boston Logan International Airport. According to U.S. authorities, there were six people on board the aircraft.

Sudden loss of altitude before contact was lost
According to flight tracking data cited by U.S. media outlets, the Gulfstream was flying at an altitude of approximately 23,500 feet when, shortly after 1 a.m., it began to descend rapidly.
Within about three minutes, it reportedly reached 11,000 feet, while its last recorded position was noted shortly before the scheduled landing time in Boston.

So far, it is not known what caused the loss of contact with the aircraft, nor have authorities confirmed that a crash occurred.
The search area has focused on the waters off Nantucket, the island located southeast of Massachusetts.
Aircraft, helicopters, and vessels are participating in the search
The U.S. Coast Guard immediately mobilized air and sea resources to locate the aircraft.
Aircraft and helicopters from Cape Cod Air Station, a rescue boat from Brant Point Station, and a Coast Guard high-speed patrol boat are participating in the operation.
“Coast Guard air and sea teams have been deployed to search for the aircraft,” the agency said, noting that the operation is underway off the coast of Nantucket.
Medical flight from Bermuda
The Gulfstream G100 was reportedly being used as an air ambulance and was linked to the Canadian company Latitude Air Ambulance, which transports patients requiring specialized medical care.
It has not been clarified, however, whether a patient was being transported on this particular flight, nor have the identities or details of the six people on board been made public.
The Gulfstream G100 is a twin-engine, medium-sized business jet that is also used for special missions, including medical evacuations.
The FAA announced that it is coordinating with the relevant Search and Rescue Coordination Center and the Coast Guard, while authorities are expected to provide further details as soon as there are any developments in the investigation.
So far, however, the key question remains unanswered: what happened in the final minutes of the flight, and why was communication with the Gulfstream lost so close to its destination?
