Wreckage from the air ambulance that went missing in the Atlantic, while flying from Bermuda to Boston, were located by rescue crews off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts.

The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed this latest development but did not report finding the six people on board, for whom the search and rescue operation continues.

The Gulfstream G100 aircraft went missing in the early hours of Saturday, October 3, and never arrived at Boston Logan International Airport, as confirmed by the operating authority, Massport. BBC World reports that the search continued through the night from Saturday into Sunday, with the fate of those on board the aircraft still unknown.

A patient and a relative were among the passengers

The aircraft, with registration number C-GRJP, belongs to the Canadian company Latitude Air Ambulance, an air ambulance service based in Hamilton, Ontario. According to the company’s operations manager, Clarence Togergetz, who spoke to the Canadian Press, the aircraft was transporting a patient and a family member. The crew consisted of two pilots and two medical personnel, all Canadians, while the two passengers were Bermudian nationals, according to torontotoday.ca.

Skyport, which operates Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport, announced that the flight departed at approximately 12:41 a.m. on Saturday, Bermuda local time. The flight was headed for Massachusetts, but communication was lost as the aircraft approached the U.S. coast.

The report of electrical problems and the distress signal

The focus is on the final communications with air traffic controllers. According to the U.S. public radio network NPR, whose report is also published on OPB, the pilot declared an emergency. Recorded communications suggest electrical problems, while the controller can be heard asking for clarification on whether the aircraft was approaching “blind.”

Available flight tracking data show a sudden loss of altitude—at least 9,000 feet in about two minutes— before the aircraft briefly maintained a more stable altitude and its signal was eventually lost. These are, however, preliminary indications and not a conclusion regarding the causes of the incident.

Nantucket Airport authorities confirmed that they had been notified of the emergency declaration, emphasizing that the exact circumstances remain unconfirmed. The airport is operating normally, while operational updates and the investigation of the incident are the responsibility of the relevant federal authorities.

Search operations by air, sea, and land

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a search and rescue alert at approximately 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, Massachusetts local time. According to the Nantucket Current, initial search efforts focused on an area approximately 13 nautical miles south of Nantucket, or about 24 kilometers from the island.

An HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Cape Cod Air Station, a Hercules aircraft from Elizabeth City, a rescue boat from the Brant Point station, and the patrol boat William Sparling. At the same time, police officers and personnel from the Nantucket Harbor Patrol searched the island’s southern coastline with vehicles.

The Coast Guard is continuing its search following the discovery of the wreckage. According to Boston 25 News, the Coast Guard has scheduled a briefing at its Boston headquarters for the morning of Sunday, October 4.

Authorities in Contact with Families

Canadian Transport Minister Stephen McKinnon confirmed that four Canadians were on board the aircraft and stated that Transport Canada is cooperating with the relevant authorities. As reported by ERT, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board had also begun gathering information about the incident.

The Bermuda government announced that it is in contact with the families of those on board and with the authorities coordinating the search and rescue operation. Prime Minister David Burt expressed his hope that all six would be found safe, thanked the rescue teams, and asked that the families’ privacy be respected.
