On Sunday, Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou highlighted housing policy as a tool for revitalizing rural communities and creating conditions that would encourage more young people to choose them as their permanent place of residence, work, and creativity, was highlighted on Sunday by Interior Minister Konstantinos Ioannou.
Speaking at the 4th Pan-Cyprian Olive and Tradition Festival in Analionta, Mr. Ioannou said that the government’s goal is “to keep our communities alive and, at the same time, to create the conditions so that more people—especially young people—can choose rural areas as a place to live, work, and thrive.”
In this context, he noted that a broader policy to support and revitalize rural areas is being implemented, with initiatives in infrastructure, services, local development, and housing.
“Moreover, housing policy, beyond its social nature, also serves as a tool for revitalizing our communities, so that young people can remain in their hometowns and new families can choose rural areas as their place of residence,” he said.
The Minister noted that, in addition to the existing housing plan for the revitalization of rural areas, the Government has announced two new housing measures. One concerns the possibility of adding an additional floor to an existing residence to house family members, and the second involves the allocation of state-owned plots of land to families that meet specific criteria.
Mr. Ioannou said that these measures “enrich our existing housing policy measures and broaden housing options, providing more opportunities for families and, in particular, for young people.”
Referring to the Olive and Tradition Festival, the Minister said that such events have broader significance, as they keep traditions alive, showcase communities, and boost tourism and the local economy.
“The olive tree and its products are inextricably linked to the history and identity of our region,” he said, noting that for centuries they have been a source of life and income for rural families and continue to be an important part of agricultural production and the local economy.
Mr. Ioannou described Analionta as an example of a community that capitalizes on its comparative advantages and showcases its traditions, expressing his hope that the Festival will continue to serve as a landmark for the region.
