Scenario for the UN: Possibility of Sinirlioğlu running for the leadership, concerns in Athens and Nicosia

Negotiations on the Cyprus issue remain shrouded in uncertainty
ALPHANEWSLIVE

“A country that violates the UN Charter—can you imagine it claiming such a position?—is not acting in a manner consistent with its behavior.”
Nikos Christodoulides – President of the Republic

This reaction by the President of the Republic has drawn strong commentary in the Turkish Cypriot press; he was asked to comment on the scenario being promoted by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan regarding the position of UN Secretary-General.

Although Rebecca Greenspan of Costa Rica remains the favorite for the position, Feridun Sinirlioğlu, Turkey’s former foreign minister and current Secretary General of the OSCE.

“Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides has made it clear that he opposes Sinirlioğlu taking the position of UN Secretary-General. Obviously, such a development is a source of deep concern for the Greek Cypriot side, mainly because of the Cyprus problem.”
Turkiye Gazetesi

Feridun Sinirlioğlu had been mentioned from time to time as a potential candidate of international stature.

However, he does not appear as a candidate on the official lists of nominees released by the UN, although it is not expected that he will be nominated in the coming days, since the Turkish government is presenting him as a consensus candidate, widely accepted by the Permanent Members of the Security Council.

Negotiations

Negotiations on the Cyprus issue, however, remain in the dark, with Nicosia awaiting word from María Ángela Olguín regarding her next visit to Cyprus, which is expected in the second half of October.

Until then, the two leaders are not expected to meet again.

In any case, Nikos Christodoulides will insist on his position that the document outlining the points of convergence must be provided to both sides.

The primary goal for António Guterres, of course, is none other than to lay the groundwork for a new informal five-party meeting in 2026, in order to reignite the Cyprus issue, before handing the baton to the next UN Secretary-General.

MOE

Beyond October, the discussion is expected to focus more intensely on potential MOUs that will facilitate the process.

It should be noted that, regarding crossing points, the Greek Cypriot side accepted the Secretary-General’s compromise proposal, whereas the Turkish Cypriot side did not.

According to “Fileleftheros,” however, Nicosia is once again bringing the issue of Famagusta to the table, in a proposal described as quite bold by diplomatic circles.
