One traffic accident after another occurred in the Parissinos area of Nicosia, with both drivers under the influence of alcohol.

In one of the two collisions, a police officer sustained minor injuries after a car driven by a 22-year-old man struck a patrol car.

Specifically, according to the police, around 10 p.m. last night, while a 44-year-old man was driving his car on Agios Prokopios Street toward the Parisinou roundabout in Nicosia, he veered off course and collided with a metal streetlight pole, where his vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the two traffic lanes.

The driver of the car sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital.

He was administered a breathalyzer test, which showed a final reading of 42 μg, exceeding the legal limit of 22 μg.

Parisinou Street, between the Parisinou roundabout and the traffic-light-controlled intersection of Agios Prokopios Street and Griva Digeni Street, had been closed off by the police for safety reasons until a repair crew could fix the traffic pole.

Around 1:30 a.m., while repair work was underway, a car driven by a 22-year-old man, exiting the Parisinou roundabout and entering Agios Prokopios Street, collided with a parked patrol car that was stationed there for security purposes, with its headlights and emergency lights on.

A police officer was inside the patrol car; he was injured and transported by ambulance to Nicosia General Hospital for examination.

The driver of the car was administered a breathalyzer test, which showed a final reading of 57 μg, exceeding the legal limit of 22 μg.

Both drivers were charged out of court with driving under the influence of alcohol. As for the two injured individuals, they are expected to be discharged from the hospital, while the Nicosia Traffic Police continue their investigation into the traffic collisions.

The two collisions involving drivers under the influence of alcohol demonstrate the need for and importance of the intensive checks and targeted measures taken by the police to prevent traffic accidents and enhance road safety.
